The Early Childhood Care and Education Project (ECCE) in Dohnavur, Tamil Nadu, targets 20 villages, aiming to improve school readiness for children aged 3-6. The current methods lean towards formal teaching and rote memorization, neglecting play-based learning crucial for development and the few good playschools that are available are always beyond the reach of the village children. The existing early childhood education approaches often prioritize formal instruction and memorization, overlooking the vital role of play-based learning in fostering development. The Dohnavur Fellowship, as part of its commitment to nation-building aims to bridge this gap by focusing initially on 30 children who face inadequate pre-school opportunities .
The ECCE is crucial in villages for nation building by establishing a strong foundation for future learning & development, fostering social and emotional skills, and ultimately contributing to a skilled and prosperous society. It endeavors to enhance critical thinking, communication and adaptability, good nutrition & healthy habits, environmental awareness and intellectual curiosity which are essential to thrive in the 21st century.
The eco-friendly campus and the rich legacy of Amy Carmichael & Godfrey Webb-Peploe is the most ideal space for the children to play, explore and learn during their vital phase of early development. The innovation lies in a three-pronged approach: engaging parents as coaches, specialized teacher training, and creating a child-friendly environment. The project networks with the Integrated Child Development Block, district offices, and nearby schools, building partnerships with donors, educational institutions and healthcare systems.
